A new path has opened between Iran and the United States, based on rejecting the military option as a means of achieving the desired outcomes in negotiations. The prevailing view in Washington today is to forgo war and give diplomacy a chance, on the assumption that Iran will undergo profound changes in the coming period, a process that will require considerable time.Against this backdrop, it is no minor detail that the first round of negotiations in Switzerland was devoted to the Lebanese issue, and more specifically to that of consolidating the cease-fire. This clearly indicates that Iran is steering the Lebanese issue, at least in part, despite U.S. efforts to open a separate Lebanese-Israeli track under its own auspices.
