BEIRUT — An Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburb on Sunday killed at least three people and wounded 15 others, according to a provisional tally from Civil Defense, reported by the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
The strike, which was carried out without warning, targeted a building in the Ghobeiri neighborhood, which was hit by two missiles. Available images show the building bordering a heavily traveled road axis in the suburb of the capital, near the Yassine City shopping center.
This Israeli attack on the southern suburb of the capital, the second in a week, was launched “in response to Hezbollah fire directed at Israeli territory,” according to a joint statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.
In another communiqué, the Israeli army stated that it targeted a “Hezbollah command center,” which was “used to prepare and promote attack plans against citizens of the State of Israel and Israeli army forces operating in southern Lebanon,” and published a video of the bombing.
According to Israeli media, the attack targeted a Hezbollah high-ranking official, at the “head of telecommunications.”
'These crimes will not go unpunished,' warned a senior Iranian official.
Earlier in the day, sirens sounded in Israeli communities near the border after drones launched from Lebanon infiltrated the area, without causing casualties. By mid-afternoon, Hezbollah had only claimed targeting Israeli soldiers in occupied Lebanese villages.
The Israeli government had announced earlier in the week that it had given the green light to the army to carry out strikes against Beirut’s southern suburb in response to every Hezbollah attack on northern Israel, without waiting for approval at the political level.
These latest developments come as United States and Iran are expected to imminently sign an agreement, which U.S. President Trump has said could be finalized this Sunday.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was the first Iranian official to respond to this attack, stating that it showed the United States’ inability to “fulfill its commitments.”
“Zionist incursion into Dahiyeh has once agains shown that America either lacks the will to fulfill its commitments or the ability to do so. By giving the green light to the regime, you cannot gain concessions. The game of bad cop and good cop is outdated. If you lack the will and ability to fulfill your commitments, speaking of continuing the path is not possible,” he said.
The Israeli “crimes” against the southern suburbs of Beirut “will not go unanswered,” Mohammad Jafar Assadi, an officer in the Iranian armed forces’ joint command, also said, according to Iranian state media.
Tehran has said for several weeks that its forces would launch missiles against Israel and U.S. interests in the region in response to any Israeli attack on Beirut’s southern suburb, which they did last week following a similar Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs.
At least two more killed in southern Lebanon
Israeli bombardments have relentlessly targeted southern Lebanon. Dozens of Israeli strikes carried out since midnight in souther Lebanon have killed at least two people on Sunday.
Since Sunday morning, the Israeli army issued forced evacuation orders for around 29 villages located north of the Litani River, in the districts of Saida and Jezzine, about 40 kilometers from the border.
The bombardments, carried out before and after these warnings, killed at least one person and injured five others in Hosh, near the Sour suburbs, where at least two motorcycles were targeted by an Israeli drone.
Another death was reported following a separate strike on the village of Zrarieh (Sour), while a serious injury was reported after a drone strike in Bazourieh (Sour).
In addition, the toll from a strike that hit Kawthariyet al-Siyyad (Saida) on Saturday rose to three killed. The victims are three women from the village: Fatima Badran, Salwa Hilal, and Batoul Ibrahim.
