U.S. and Iran signal peace deal is near: What we know
The United States and Iran say a peace deal is close: what to know The United States and Iran signaled on Friday that an agreement aimed at ending their war was close.
A senior U.S. administration official said a text now exists and is acceptable to both sides. For his part, the spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said decision-making bodies in Tehran were meeting to review the memorandum. A Western source said the deal could be signed as early as Sunday, Reuters reports.
Pakistan, which has been trying for several weeks to play a mediating role between the two countries, said that a final peace agreement text between the United States and Iran had been reached. “Pakistan is now working closely with both parties to finalize the next steps,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote in a post on X.
Leaked terms of the draft memorandum of understanding, described Friday by Western, Pakistani and Iranian sources, appeared to favor Iran, prompting criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who dismissed the reports as inaccurate. Although the various versions contain some minor differences, they all appeared to grant Tehran much of what it has sought since the start of negotiations. Trump would appear to secure few concessions in return, apart from the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had closed after attacks launched in February by the United States and Israel.
However, a senior U.S. administration official said the agreement includes explicit provisions on reopening the strait as well as the removal of enriched nuclear material. According to the official, Iran would benefit from significant sanctions relief depending on its compliance with the terms of the deal.
'80 to 85%' probability of a deal with Iran, according to a senior US official
A senior U.S. official estimated on Friday a “80 to 85%,” but “not 100%,” probability that an agreement with Iran will be signed in the “coming days,” AFP reports. During a press exchange, he said he “felt very good” about the completion of the negotiations, while warning that the “finish line had not yet been crossed.”
The agreement under discussion with Iran 'includes Lebanon,' according to a senior US official
A senior U.S. official said on Friday that the agreement under discussion with Iran “included Lebanon,” expressing optimism that the final outcome of the negotiations would also be acceptable to Israel and the Gulf countries, AFP reports.
Regarding possible Iranian reservations, he said they were “rather minimal,” judging that there was a “broad consensus” in favor of the agreement in Tehran, including within the Revolutionary Guards, among “hardliners,” and among “civilian authorities.”
Switzerland offers to host possible US–Iran agreement signing
Switzerland has offered to host the potential signing of an agreement between the United States and Iran, according to Switzerland’s foreign ministry, speaking to AFP.

The ministry added that it is acting as a facilitator to support efforts toward a memorandum of understanding aimed at consolidating a truce and paving the way for de-escalation in the broader conflict between the United States and Iran.
It also confirmed that Switzerland has proposed itself as a venue for a possible signature ceremony, should both parties agree.
Nabatieh’s imam mosque criticizes media report claiming city has extensive Hezbollah tunnels and infrastructure under the city
A statement was issued by Sheikh Abdul Hussein Sadiq, the imam of a mosque in Nabatieh, in response to recent media reporting about alleged large underground infrastructure beneath Nabatieh.
He said that the reports, which were attributed to a “Western source,” contained “serious and dangerous claims” suggesting the existence of extensive tunnels and military infrastructure under the city, warning that such narratives could be used to justify targeting or destruction of Nabatieh and to provide “false media legitimacy for a potential crime against its heritage and civilian life.”
He emphasized that Nabatieh is a historic and populated city with active social, educational, medical, and economic life, questioning how such infrastructure could exist under a functioning civilian urban environment. He described the allegations as lacking logic and credibility.
The statement further highlighted the city’s historical and cultural significance, describing it as a major center in southern Lebanon with deep social and cultural roots, and referenced the suffering of its residents due to ongoing tensions and displacement.
It called on the Lebanese state to urgently investigate the claims, take responsibility, and prevent any possible targeting of the city. It also urged authorities to involve the Lebanese Army and to allow international media and U.N. human rights organizations to inspect the situation on the ground in order to verify facts and refute what it described as false allegations.
The statement comes after reports by Saudi-TV Hadath on the alleged presence of Hezbollah tunnels and infrastructure frustration below Nabatieh.

- The Strait of Hormuz would be reopened

Israel will not withdraw from 'security zones' in Lebanon, Syria, or Gaza, says Katz
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that the Israeli army will not withdraw from what he described as “security zones” in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, as ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran appear to be moving toward a possible agreement.
In a post on X, Katz said:
“Israel will not withdraw from the security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza. The IDF will continue to protect our borders and our citizens from the Hermon ridge, the mountains of Lebanon, our areas in Samaria, and most of the territory of Gaza — facing the threats of jihadist forces and organizations, drawing a key lesson from the events of Oct.7.”
He also said the Israeli army would not withdraw from what he called “terror camps” in northern Samaria, which he said had already been evacuated of their residents, adding that if necessary, operations could expand to other camps. He referred in particular to Palestinian refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams in the West Bank.
Katz said U.S. President Donald Trump was currently conducting negotiations with Iran based on American interests, which he said also align with Israel’s goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
He added that Israel expects Washington to uphold this principle, as well as restrictions on missiles and regional armed groups.
Katz also said that Israel and the United States had together “inflicted severe blows on Iran that pushed back its capabilities by many years.”
He stressed that Israel must retain the ability to act independently to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and he had instructed the military to prepare accordingly.
He concluded by saying:
“Much is at stake in this period, and we are determined to continue and implement a firm security policy that will prevent any harm to our security gains and will not endanger our ability to fight the Shiite axis of evil led by Iran and the Sunni axis of evil led by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

In a statement carried by Al-Manar TV, the bloc condemned the latest round of direct negotiations between Lebanese authorities and Israel, rejecting what it described as “unjust outcomes imposing unilateral commitments on Lebanon.”
The bloc, known as “Loyalty to the Resistance,” said it remains vigilant against Israel and claimed that its fighters have inflicted significant losses on Israeli forces in personnel and equipment, placing the Israeli army in what it described as a strategic impasse.
It also praised what it called Iran’s missile response to an earlier Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, framing it as a legitimate defense of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Additionally, the bloc argued that direct negotiations with Israel contradict the 1989 Taif Agreement, which ended Lebanon’s civil war and established the framework of the country’s current political system.

Salam accuses Tehran of seeking to demonstrate that 'the final decision-making power in Lebanon remains in its hands'
In an interview with the British newspaper The Times, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam argued that Iran's rejection of the cease-fire agreement was not simply a political stance but a message from Tehran seeking to emphasize that the final decision-making power in Lebanon remained in its hands.
He asserted that Iran wanted to convey to the world that Lebanon was "merely a pawn," citing the announcement of its position before any official statement from Hezbollah as evidence of the extent of Tehran's influence within the party. The prime minister stressed that the reconstruction of war-torn territories could only be carried out through the Lebanese state and its official institutions.
Salam also asserted that the influence of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard extends beyond Hezbollah's military and security wings to encompass the party's decision-making processes. He argued that the party's former secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, enjoyed greater autonomy, while current Iranian influence is more direct and decisive.
