Rose Issa, the woman who introduced Arab art to Western audiences

“I’ve never been interested in academia; I’ve always been fascinated by life,” says the 77-year-old curator and publisher, who was the first, in the early 1980s, to champion Middle Eastern art in France, then in the United Kingdom and even in the United States.

Though she describes herself as “semi-retired,” she splits her time between Nice — where she bought a seafront apartment, unable to afford one in Beirut, she told L’Orient-Le Jour — and London. The white-haired, bright-eyed woman, who will soon celebrate 45 years of “artistic projects,” remains as curious and enthusiastic as ever.
