Report: Ain al-Mreisseh bids farewell to the Hamad building
The Israeli attack on Ain al-Mreisseh, one of its 100 strikes in under 10 minutes on April 8, killed 24 people — all civilians. L’Orient-Le Jour met with some of the survivors and relatives of the victims.
We met Dima Harb on April 15 in a café in Badaro. She is staying with a cousin who now lives in the United States. She describes the nightmare of April 8, what it means to lose your home — not only its objects, but its soul, its memories, family trees reduced to ashes, and a future erased not only by the destruction of the present but also by the erasure of the past.
“My mother always said Ain al-Mreisseh was to her what the sea is to fish. Outside the neighborhood, she was like a fish out of water,” Dima says.
A year and a half ago, the woman she and Karim called Zouzou died of cancer, as did their father Ahmad a decade earlier. “When I went back, there was almost nothing left, but from below I could still see the living room sofa,” Dima continues. “For three years I slept on that sofa to watch over my mother. She lay on the Maurice armchair next to it. She couldn’t lie in her bed. It was in that living room that she took her last breath. On April 8, I lost my parents a second time.”

Pakistan facilitates return of Iranian cargo ship crew seized by United States
Pakistan has announced that it has intervened to facilitate the return home of 22 crew members of an Iranian cargo ship seized by the United States in the Sea of Oman, a “measure to restore trust” as part of a fragile diplomatic process.
The sailors, who were being held on the container ship Touska, which was boarded by the U.S. Navy in the Sea of Oman, arrived by plane in Islamabad on Sunday evening and are due to be handed over to the Iranian authorities on Monday, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 20 that the U.S. Navy had fired on the Iranian-flagged Touska in the Gulf of Oman — a vessel subject to U.S. Treasury sanctions — and had taken control of it.
Statement by Naim Qassem, Secretary General of Hezbollah
"We are facing a dangerous phase in the history of our region and the future of our country and generations, in which the criminal Zionist enemy, supported and directed by the unjust American tyrant, along with forces of oppression, colonialism, and those chasing worldly gains stained with the blood of extermination and the killing of childhood and life, has united against us.
That the resistance, its people, and its supporters stand with limited numbers and resources against the tyranny of brutal forces, offer martyrs in the most honorable form, prevent the enemy from achieving its objectives, remain steadfast and continue, then steadfastness is what shapes the future of our country, our generations, and our region alongside our allies, a future of dignity, independence, and honor...
...The aggression aims to strip rights and occupy land and the future by force, while the resistance aims to liberate land and achieve justice. With the resistance, the enemy fails to achieve its goals no matter how arrogant it becomes.
There is no cease-fire in Lebanon, but rather ongoing Israeli American aggression. No words are sufficient to condemn the targeting of civilians, villages, towns, destruction, and the killing of children, women, men, and the elderly. We remain patient and resist, and Allah is with us.
Lebanon is the victim of aggression and requires guarantees for its security and sovereignty. As for the enemy’s claim that it seeks the security of its settlements in northern occupied Palestine, Lebanon had already provided that by strictly implementing the Nov. 27, 2024 agreement for fifteen months. However, the Israeli enemy did not implement a single step of the agreement, violated it more than ten thousand times, killed five hundred civilians, wounded hundreds, destroyed thousands of homes and livelihoods, and displaced people from their villages, all because it failed to achieve any progress toward its expansion project, and it will not achieve it even if all forces of oppression unite with it.
The army deployed south of the Litani River in implementation of the agreement, and some ask where the resistance fighters and weapons came from. The resistance has adopted methods suited to the phase and benefited from lessons learned. Everyone has witnessed the precision and effectiveness of its performance and its surprises on the battlefield. There is no need to remain fixed in geography, fighters come from various areas in Lebanon, secure appropriate weapons, and operate with hit and run tactics to inflict maximum losses on enemy soldiers and officers and prevent them from stabilizing in the occupied land. There is no such thing as a yellow line or buffer zone, and there never will be.
With our faith and exclusive choice to reclaim and liberate our land without surrender, we will inevitably succeed, especially by relying on two strengths, the strength of the resistance and the strength of internal unity. The resistance and its people are delivering an extraordinary performance that has astonished both enemies and allies, do not undermine it. We are not asking you to adopt its convictions, but we ask you not to serve the enemy camp in this sensitive phase. The authorities must preserve national unity, achieve sovereignty, instruct the army to defend the country, ensure protection for all citizens, and address economic and social issues. They must demonstrate achievements, properly implement the Taif Agreement without selectivity or misinterpretation, and adhere to the constitution and coexistence so that representation is correct and performance acceptable. Despite its limitations, it should develop plans and programs based on building the state and its sovereignty, and we remain ready as always to support within unity and independence.
Is there any country in the world where its authority aligns with the enemy against its own resistance fighting occupation, there is none. Let us confront the enemy’s objectives and liberate the land through our internal unity so that together we succeed in expelling the enemy and enabling the authorities to fulfill their duties.
Four factors help us overcome this phase, the continuation of resistance, internal understanding, benefiting from the Iranian American agreement, and benefiting from any international or regional movement that pressures the enemy.
The world must understand that surrender is not the solution. The solution is not to reshape Lebanon politically and militarily into a weak state under tutelage, nor through constrained diplomacy under ongoing aggression and pressure without implementation of agreements.
We support diplomacy that leads to stopping aggression and implementing agreements. We support indirect negotiations that have produced results such as the maritime agreement and the ceasefire agreement while preserving Lebanon’s rights. Direct negotiations, however, are a free concession without results, serving the interests of Netanyahu who seeks a symbolic image of victory, and serving Trump ahead of midterm elections.
O youth of the resistance, you are shaping a dignified future and offering the noblest sacrifices. Your blood has bound Lebanon’s land, making it resistant to invaders and those who compromise. Your banner will endure as long as the earth, sky, sun, and air endure. The blood of the martyrs of the resistance, foremost among them Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, may God be pleased with him, Sayyed Hashem, and all martyrs and wounded, lights our path along with the prisoners and the sacrificing people.
Greetings of love and solidarity to our sacrificing people, the displaced, and supporters who have become a symbol of patriotism, sacrifice, and support for truth. Thanks to all who sheltered, supported, and assisted from all communities, parties, figures, media, the health sector, officials, ministers, and institutions, without exception.
Special greetings to those who established the national gathering and held its comprehensive meeting in support of the resistance, the nation, unity, liberation, and honor. You have presented a bright image of Lebanon through the unity of forces, parties, figures, and civil and independent bodies from all regions and communities, expressing a resisting, promising, unified, and liberated Lebanon."
Macron says 'essential' that Lebanon's cease-fire be respected
French President Emmanuel Macron has asserted that it is "essential" for the cease-fire to be respected in Lebanon.
“I would like to reiterate here that it is essential that the cease-fire be respected in Lebanon,” he said on his arrival at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Armenia. “This is the commitment the parties have made, and I say this for the sake of Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and the protection of the civilian population,” he added.
