Geagea condemns Iranian strikes on Gulf states

The head of the Lebanese Forces (LF), Samir Geagea, condemned the Iranian attacks on the Gulf states in a statement.

“At the beginning of the war against Iran, we thought that the landing of some missiles on the Gulf states – the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia – was unintentional and part of the intense, violent and indiscriminate missile exchanges between the United States and Israel on the one hand, and Iran on the other,” the LF leader said.

“However, it is clear that Iran deliberately targeted the Gulf states, not only certain American military installations, but also Arab civilian infrastructure in all of its attacks,” he added.

“We strongly condemn these missile and drone attacks against the Gulf States and are deeply astonished by their continuation, given the very moderate, even pro-Iranian, positions adopted by these countries before the outbreak of this war. We therefore do not understand the logic behind this change of attitude, which is synonymous with excessive and deadly negativity,” he concluded.

“It’s been a year since their command was eliminated, and they haven’t touched a single base because they know their troop deficit. They haven’t moved an inch when it comes to their own command, but to protect what remains of the Iranian command, it’s okay, they can kill Lebanese people? No, that’s not acceptable,” he added.

Welcoming the government's decision on Monday to end Hezbollah's security and military activities, he added that "the challenge lies in implementation," he insisted, calling for an end to missile launches, the dismantling of military infrastructure, and the surrender of weapons.

"Lebanese citizens will witness the beginning of the implementation of the government's decision regarding Hezbollah's weapons within hours, and some arrests of those involved have already begun," he added, endorsing all the measures taken by the government on Monday.

"We stand with you and with the state," he told the president, stating that while restoring the state's monopoly on weapons may be difficult, it is far more difficult to see Lebanon burn, be destroyed and its people killed.

"We are here to protect the children of southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut," he added.

Quintet believes Lebanese Army 'must act' to stop rocket fire toward Israel

Following the meeting between Joseph Aoun and the ambassadors of the Quintet (United States, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar), the Egyptian ambassador reported on the content of the discussions.

"The situation and developments were presented, as well as Lebanon's vision for addressing it in a context of danger, and efforts to contain tensions. We also discussed the role of the Quintet and the working mechanism [the body responsible for monitoring the cease-fire agreement reached at the end of November 2024 between Israel and Hezbollah] to prevent further damage to Lebanon, as well as the work of the Lebanese Army in the coming period and the measures that the Lebanese state must take," the diplomat stated during a press briefing.

“We affirmed our support for the Lebanese state at this stage and our full backing of the Cabinet’s decisions, insisting on the rejection of any action outside of Lebanese legitimacy.

Diplomacy is the safest path to protect Lebanon’s security and stability and preserve its sovereignty,” he added, referring to the government’s firm decision on Monday to reinstate the state monopoly on weapons “by all necessary means.”

“We pledge our support for the Lebanese army and confirm that a conference in support of the army will be held in France [originally scheduled for March 5 and postponed until at least April] as soon as conditions allow,” Alaa Moussa further stated.

“Everyone supports the Lebanese state’s decision. As for Hezbollah’s continued rocket fire, it is up to the Lebanese army to act on this matter.”

"President Aoun assured us that the army will continue the implementation of the second phase of its plan, without backing down," the diplomat concluded.
