Relieved after the fall of the Assad regime, relatives of the disappeared are now fighting for justice and compensation from the new leadership, whose initial actions do not make unanimity.

“I feel like no one talks about the issue of the disappeared anymore. Yet it was the main objective of Syria's liberation,” said Fatima al-Khatib from the Bekaa Valley on Feb. 28. Behind this woman dressed in black sit orphans whose parents disappeared in the jails belonging to Bashar al-Assad's regime. They're learning to make colorful candles at the Bouzrat Kheir (“seed of happiness”) Center, founded in Taalabaya by Syrian women who have also lost track of one or more detained relatives.
