Ghosts of Ali Cherri in display windows of Paris Bourse de Commerce

As part of the "Corps et âmes" exhibition hosted by the Bourse de Commerce starting March 5, the Lebanese artist presents his installation "Twenty-Four Ghosts Per Second" where his hybrid sculptures become the chimeric characters of a film where cultures and eras collide.

One of the most striking aspects of Ali Cherri’s work, and perhaps his most unsettling tour de force, is the way he creates a sense of transparency between his work as a filmmaker and his practice as a sculptor and plastic artist.His films, such as Le Barrage (2022) and The Watchman (2024), often transform their subjects into sculptural forms. Through his framing and composition, bodies and faces take on a museum-like quality. This was particularly evident in Somniculus (2017), shot in Paris, where Cherri replaced human actors with artworks and objects filmed in empty museums.At the same time, his exhibitions — most notably Envisagement, where he engaged in dialogue with the work of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti — turn galleries into film sets.
