The Israeli army today called on more members of the ultra-Orthodox community to join forces to fight on the country's southern and northern borders, a decision that risks exacerbating tensions between religious and secular Israelis, Reuters reported.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said on Friday that 7,000 members of the community would gradually receive notices, starting on Sunday. A statement from the ministry said it would work with community leaders to ensure that ultra-Orthodox soldiers could preserve their religious lifestyle while on duty.

Yesterday, four series of strikes had targeted Beirut's southern suburbs throughout. This area has been shelled regularly since the beginning of the week, day and night. Calls to evacuate had also been made on Saturday to some fifteen buildings in Sour, which had been heavily bombed even before the threats, and to some 15 villages in southern Lebanon.

At around 6.45 a.m., the Israeli army called on residents of three buildings in and around Beirut's southern suburbs to evacuate "immediately" ahead of strikes.

According to maps posted on the Israeli army's Arabic-speaking spokesman, Avichay Adraee, X accoing, the threatened buildings are located in:

- Hadath, facing Saint Georges Hospital and Notre-Dame de Bon Secours Church, 7

- Burj al-Barajneh, between Burj Hidaya School and Imam Reza School.

- Chiyah, opposite Mar Mikhael church.

"You are in the vicinity of Hezbollah infrastructure, against which the army will take action in the near future," the army threatened, calling on residents to evacuate "immediately" from at least 500 meters away.

These warnings have been condemned and deemed insufficient by multiple international rights groups.
