BEIRUT — A man drowned off the coast of Sour in South Lebanon on Sunday, and three others were injured, Ali Safieddine, head of the Marine Center in the Lebanese Civil Defense, confirmed to L'Orient Today.
Emergency responders from the Lebanese Civil Defense, Amal-affiliated medical association Islamic Risala Scouts, and the Lebanese Red Cross pulled out four people from the sea. Two of them were transferred to Jabal Amel Hospital, while the other two were taken to the Lebanese-Italian Hospital for treatment. Muhammad Hussein Shaalan, a 29-year-old Lebanese, died as a result of drowning.
Unstable weather conditions and powerful waves have, at times, made swimming off Lebanon's coasts particularly dangerous this summer.
Earlier on Sunday morning, the General Directorate of Civil Defense warned beachgoers and boat owners of the risk of drowning due to wind speed, high waves and water currents. It urged everyone to adhere to public safety guidelines.
