Mikati calls on Israel to cease its aggressions against south Lebanon: Day 133 of Hamas-Israel war

What you need to know

Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said Israel "will pay the price" for civilians killed in south Lebanon, during a speech today.

Five patients at Nasser Hospital, the largest in southern Gaza, have died after power cuts prevented the supply of oxygen. The Israeli army has besieged and is now raiding the medical facility.

The Gazan Ministry of Health has announced a new provisional death toll of 28,775 in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah and Amal announced the deaths of five of their members Friday morning.

The Israeli army has instructed logistics companies to prepare a third crossing to open for aid deliveries into northern Gaza, according to a report from Saudi-owned, London-based news magazine Al Majalla.

Karni crossing is one of four entry points along Gaza’s eastern border with Israel, and one of three that are located in the north of the enclave. Of the seven border crossings that exist, or have existed, along the entire militarized border between Gaza, Israel and Egypt, only Rafah and Kerem Shalom, both along Gaza’s southern border, are open for aid deliveries.

Israel has imposed strict limitations on how much and what kind of aid can enter Gaza. The difficulty of getting aid to northern Gaza all the way from the southern entry points is compounded by conditions on the ground and an Israeli checkpoint that dissects the Strip, where aid trucks are often refused entry.

During a televised address earlier this evening, al-Qassam Brigades spokes person Abu Obeida said that Hamas continues to fight "throughout Gaza — in the north, center, and south," AFP reports.

"We are conducting battles in an organized manner and according to tactics we set for ourselves. We will continue the struggle until the last soldier leaves Gaza. Thousands of our fighters are still deployed in all areas of the strip," Obeida said.

Last week, Haaretz reported that Hamas had redeployed police and paid civil service workers their salaries in the north of the enclave, bringing into question Israel's claims that its army had "dismantled" the group.

Israel will coordinate with Egypt ahead of its military operation in Rafah, says Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, according to AFP. Rafah is the most southern city in Gaza, where more than a million Palestinians are trapped, surrounded by Israeli bombardment and pressed up against a closed border with Egypt.

"Egypt is our ally," Katz told the Munich Security Conference in southern Germany. "We have a peace agreement with Egypt and we will operate in a way that does not harm Egyptian interests."

"We will operate in Gaza after coordinating with Egypt," he said, adding that Israel would "keep US President Joe Biden informed" of the military offensive.

According to the Wall Street Journal and an Egyptian NGO, Cairo is building a closed, secure camp in Sinai to accommodate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip fleeing the war in the event of an Israeli offensive on Rafah. Diplomats, leaders, and humanitarian aid organizations around the world have called for Israel to back down from its plans to attack Rafah with a ground incursion.

A record 52 states will present arguments about the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN's highest legal body, Reuters reports.

The ICJ's six days of hearings starting on Monday come after the UN General Assembly asked the court in 2022 for an advisory, or non-binding, opinion on the occupation. While Israel has ignored such opinions in the past, it could add political pressure over its ongoing operation in Gaza, which has killed 28,775 people, mostly civilians.

It is the second time the UN General Assembly has asked the ICJ, also known as the World Court, for an advisory opinion related to the occupied Palestinian territory. In July 2004, the court found that Israel's separation wall in the West Bank violated international law and should be dismantled, though it still stands to this day.

The Israeli army accused Nasrallah of "lying" and putting the "interests of his masters in Iran above" the interests of people in Lebanon.

The Israeli army’s Arabic-speaking spokesperson posted on X saying: "O residents of Lebanon, Nasrallah insulted you, claiming that you had two options: resistance or surrender. He is lying to you. Lebanon was calm, but Nasrallah chose to go to war in support of rapists and child killers. Nasrallah has put the interests of his masters in Iran above your interests, dreams and ambitions."

Following the Oct. 7 attack, Israel accused Hamas of beheading babies and committing acts of sexual assault in southern Israel. The claims of beheaded babies, spread widely in the media and even repeated by the US president, have since proven to be false. The UN went to Israel in January to investigate the allegations of sexual assault. A report on the matter has yet to be published, but questions have already been raised regarding the quality of the evidence used to back these claims.

Al-Qassam Brigades spokesperson Abu Obeida says there have been many losses among Israeli hostages, “while other hostages live in extremely difficult conditions,” in an audio message cited by Reuters.

"We warned dozens of times about the dangers to which their hostages are being exposed. We didn't want the situation to reach this stage, but [Israel's] leadership ignored us," he said. "For months, we tried to protect and care for the lives of these hostages, as it is our top humanitarian goal to liberate our own prisoners and to realize the legitimate rights of our people."

"The wounded and sick enemy prisoners are going through very difficult conditions and are struggling to stay alive. This is not surprising because everything that our people are suffering from, be it hunger, thirst and lack of medical help, is also what the enemy prisoners are suffering from."

Israel's chief military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said on Tuesday that 31 of the remaining 136 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza were dead. One hundred hostages were released in November in exchange for the release of 240 Palestinians detained in Israeli jails.

During Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's speech this afternoon, the Israeli army said that it is continuing to "strengthen its operational readiness on the northern front," according to the military’s Arabic-speaking spokesperson, Avichay Adraee.

"The fighters of the Golani Brigade began the process this week of increased readiness on the northern front, alongside the training of reservists,” said the spokesperson, specifying that the exercises included a drill in "mountainous and complex terrain."

Israeli officials have been saying for a couple weeks now that if Lebanon-Israel border hostilities do not cease, they will take military action in order to ensure the return of around 80,000 Israeli evacuated from the north of the country, implying significant escalation.

18:02 Beirut Time

Hezbollah announced the death of one of its fighters, Khaled Mohammad al-Tamer, born in 1980, a native of Arzi, and resident of Kherbet Selm, in southern Lebanon. As usual, the party did not specify when or where he was killed.

According to our count, 206 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in Lebanon and Syria since Oct. 8, with at least 180 of the deaths having occurred in Lebanon.

17:53 Beirut Time

Updates from southern Lebanon:

• Hezbollah announces that its fighters targeted a group of Israeli soldiers at 4:10 p.m. positioned in Ramiye, facing the southern Lebanese town of Aita al-Shaab, "with the appropriate weapons, hitting them directly." The party claims to have caused "deaths and injuries."

• In a separate statement, Hezbollah announced that, at 4:30 p.m., its fighters targeted a deployment of soldiers near the Doviv barracks, facing the southern Lebanese town of Yaroun, "with missiles." It claims to have "inflicted direct damage."

17:34 Beirut Time

Israeli war Cabinet minister Benny Gantz says “there will not be a cease-fire of even one day until the hostages are returned,” according to reports from Israeli media.

“The fighting will continue until our goals are achieved. It can continue even in the month of Ramadan. Either the hostages will be returned, or we will extend the fighting to Rafah,” Gantz said in an address today.

Outgoing Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati says that Lebanon will remain "committed to all UN resolutions," calling on Israel to "implement them, cease its aggression against south Lebanon and its violation of Lebanese sovereignty, and withdraw from occupied Lebanese territories."

"While Lebanon insists on stability in the region and calls on all parties to refrain from escalation, Israel continues its aggression, which makes us wonder about the measures taken by the international community to stop this persistent aggression," he said during a speech at the opening session of the 60th Munich Security Conference, relayed by the state-run National News Agency.

Mikati called for "those responsible for any aggression against international humanitarian law, including attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers, to be held accountable."

17:00 Beirut Time

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah has finished his speech.

16:58 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: "The presidency in Lebanon has nothing to do with Gaza. The Resistance has nothing to do with Lebanese internal politics."

"We did not say that we are going to impose a President of the Republic. The presidency is an internal matter. [Speaker of Parliament] Nabih Berri has already called for dialogue several times, but everyone refuses."

"We have never imposed political options on behalf of the Resistance. The weapons of the Resistance will not be used to change the political system in Lebanon; they serve to protect Lebanon and its people. There is no need for delineation of the land border; it is already established. If there will be any discussion, it will be for the Israelis to leave our lands."

16:56 Beirut Time

Three attacks against Israel were claimed by Hezollah since Nasrallah started his speech:

• Hezbollah announced that it hit the Malikiyah site with a Burkan missile at 3:15 p.m.

• The party also announced that it hit the sites of Ruwaisat al-Alam and Zebdin in the occupied Shebaa Farms with guided missiles at 3:50 and 4:00 p.m. respectively.

• In southern Lebanon, heavy Israeli artillery shelling targeted the outskirts of Kfar Hammam, Hasbaya district, and Aita al-Shaab, Bint Jbeil district, residents told our correspondent in the South.

16:51 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: "We do not interfere in Hamas' negotiations with Israel. It is up to them to make the necessary decisions; they are the ones who pay the highest price. Yemen and the resistance in Iraq have the same attitude.”

16:49 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: “There are two options for the Resistance — to resist or to yield. The price of yielding is high. So, this calls for expanding the battle, but at the same time, not to stray from the main battle, which is to support Gaza.”

“For years, Israel’s main goal has been to displace Palestinians from their lands and establish a Jewish state. They want to send people living in the West Bank to Jordan, the ‘Palestinians of '48’ [Israeli Arabs] to Lebanon, and those from Gaza to Egypt.”

16:44 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: “Regarding UNRWA, as soon as Israel made accusations, they stopped funding. But there is still no proof."

Israel showed the US a six-page dossier, seen by Channel 4 News, in which they claim they were able to identify “more than 10 UNRWA staffers” who took part in the Oct. 7 attack, via “intelligence information, documents and identity card seized during the course of the fighting.” However, Israel did not include this evidence in the document, and this is the document that prompted almost two-dozen countries to pull funding from the main source of humanitarian aid for the battered Gaza Strip.

16:38 Beirut Time

Hassan Nasrallah has been speaking about allegations that Hamas committed sexual assault and massacred children…

Nasrallah: “Some Arab countries believed it, even those who say they are close to Hamas. They wanted to equate Hamas with Daesh. The Israelis could not present a single piece of evidence.”

In January, a United Nations team travelled to Israel to examine reports of sexual violence during the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7. Multiple news organizations had reported allegations of sexual violence following the attack, but questions have equally been raised about the quality of evidence used in the allegations.

While denying the allegations, Hamas also recognized, in a pamphlet published in January detailing the group’s account of events, that the chaos of Oct. 7 led to errors in the operation. When Hamas broke through the barrier that encloses the blockaded enclave, thousands of people poured through and into the Gaza Envelope, the area surrounding the Strip.

The allegations of beheaded babies, spread widely throughout the media, has since been proven false.

16:22 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: "What Ansar Allah [Houthis] did in Yemen when they targeted Israeli ships in the Red Sea, left a significant mark. Yemenis are not seeking revenge. Americans are dealing with Yemen, so Israel can focus on Lebanon and Palestine. We respond to Americans by continuing to target Israeli ships. We must not change our battle."

Yesterday the leader of the Houthis hailed "great success" and "victory" in their campaign against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

16:18 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: "Americans and Israelis must know that Palestinians will not back down, no matter the sacrifices. The front in southern Lebanon will not stop. Israeli [Minister of Defense] Yoav Gallant forgot that the resistance in Lebanon has missiles capable of reaching all of Israeli territory."

Yesterday, Gallant told a war preparedness meeting of Israeli officials that his forces "can attack not only 20 kilometers (from the border), but also 50 kilometers, in Beirut, and everywhere else." This quote was the latest in a long string of back-and-forth threats between Hezbollah and Israel.

16:08 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: “The southern Lebanese front remains. Killing [Hezbollah] fighters on the ground and hitting the southern suburbs will not stop the resistance. We must continue and escalate.”

“We hit the Kiryat Shmona barracks yesterday with several Falaq and Katiousha missiles, and that's the first response. The enemy will pay the price for the deaths of our women and children over the last few days.”

16:06 Beirut Time

Nasrallah: "The enemy's goal when they kill civilians is to put pressure on the Resistance. Israel needs to understand that in this matter, it has gone too far. When it comes to civilians, for us, it's a sensitive issue. The Resistance has started targeting Israeli localities and has established the equation of civilians versus civilians.”

15:54 Beirut Time

In regards to the deadly strikes on Nabatieh on Wednesday evening …

Nasrallah: “What happened was a development that first affected civilians. What happened was premeditated. If Israel had only wanted to target fighters, it could have avoided the civilians.”

"We are in a real battle with a fierce enemy supported by the United States. We are not symmetrical when it comes to military against military."

Seven civilians and three Hezbollah members were killed in a single air strike on a residential building in Nabatieh on Wednesday, marking the deadliest day in southern Lebanon since Oct. 8. The seven civilians were all members of the same family, gathered for dinner. Read our coverage about the victims here.  👈

The recognition of a Palestinian state is "not a taboo for France," said Emmanuel Macron for the first time on Friday as he received King Abdullah II of Jordan in Paris, reports AFP.

He also warned that a forced and massive displacement of the population "would again be a serious violation of international law and a major risk of regional escalation."
