Singer-actress Najah Salam dies at 92

BEIRUT — Singer and actress Najah Salam died on Thursday, at the age of 92, state-run National News Agency reported.

Salam, a well-known Egyptian-Lebanese artist, was famed across the Arab world and was especially known for her performances of patriotic songs and religious chants, the NNA reported.

In 1995, she won an Oscar award from the "Society Honoring Giants of Arab Art" in the United States. 

At the beginning of her career in 1948, she travelled with her father to Cairo, where she met famous artists like Umm Kulthum, Farid al-Atrash and Asmahan, Zakariyya, amongst others.

In 1949, Salam recorder her first songs "hawel ya ghanam" and "ya jarha kalbi." Salam sang across the region, from Aleppo and Damascus, to Baghdad and Ramallah.

In 1950, she returned to Lebanon to record songs for local radio.

Some of the movies she featured in include Ala Kayfak, Ibn Thawat, El Dunya Lamma Tidhak, and Lovely Bus Conductors.
