BEIRUT — The head of the Beirut municipality, Jamal Itani, has resigned for health reasons, several local media outlets reported on Friday evening.
Contacted by L'Orient-Le Jour, Itani could not be reached for comment.
However, he told Annahar newspaper that the decision was made "due to his health condition and his inability to perform his duties with the same energy."
Jamal Itani, in his 60s, has held his office since the May 2016 municipal elections.
The next round of elections, which were already postponed for one year in 2022, were scheduled to take place on May 7, 2023. In April, Parliament voted to extend the mandate of municipal councils and mukhtars for a maximum period of one year.
Their mandates now expire no later than May 31, 2024.
