BEIRUT — The Consumer Protection Directorate on Wednesday seized 117 kilograms of spoiled meat in South Lebanon and shut down the butchery selling it, while its owner was arrested, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The Consumer Protection Directorate closed the butchery in al-Msayleh area in South Lebanon, where the expired meat was found, sealing it with red wax.

According to the NNA, the directorate worked with the support of the Public Security Agency who arrested the butcher on a signal given by the Public Prosecution in the south.

The Consumer Protection Directorate regularly seizes expired meat and other food-stuffs across Lebanon as part of a broader food safety campaign initiated in 2014 by then-health Minister Wael Bou Faour, to inspect butcher shops, grocery stores and restaurants.
