Caretaker finance minister announces LL125 billion for kidney dialysis

BEIRUT — Caretaker Finance Minister Youssef Khalil announced in a statement on Monday that the Treasury has paid LL125 billion to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) to enable it cover the full price of kidney dialysis that was at risk of no longer being subsidized.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to the state-run National News Agency, the director of the CNSS, Mohammad Karaki, and the head of the General Confederation of Lebanese Workers Bechara Asmar thanked Khalil on Monday morning for the funds.

    • The NNA also reported that Khalil promised that he would "study the possibility of paying LL400 billion in Treasury bonds to the CNSS before the end of the year," as soon as the necessary consultations on the subject are made by the Court of Auditors.

    • The health sector in Lebanon has been hit hard by the socioeconomic crisis and country’s financial collapse, as well as many doctors leaving Lebanon for better opportunities abroad.
