BEIRUT — A list of independent candidates in Mount Lebanon I, Kesrouan-Jbeil, “Sarkhet Watan” (A Nation’s Cry), which includes Neemat George Frem, former MP (resigning in the wake of the 2020 port blast) and president of the National Economy, Trade, Industry and Planning Committee, was announced Saturday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

•  During the announcement, the list was described as grouping “opposition and transformative figures, independent and party-affiliated [individuals], along with representatives of civil society and the popular movement [referring to the October 2019 uprisings].”

•  In addition to Frem, the candidates for Kesrouan’s five Maronite seats are Salim Boutros Al-Sayegh, Julie Fawzy Daccache, Wajdi Khalil Tabet and Josephine Antoine Zughaib. Jbeil district’s candidates are Najwa Victor Bassil and Nofal Youssef Nofal, vying for the two Maronite seats, and Amir Muhammad Abdel Karim Al-Mekdad, contesting the Shia seat.

•  The candidates will be facing the independent list “The Independent Heart of Lebanon,” which includes sitting MPs Farid Haykal Al Khazen and Chamel Roukoz, as well as the Lebanese Forces-supported list “With you, we can go all the way,” which was registered on Wednesday.

•  The deadline to register candidate lists with the Interior Ministry is April 4.
