BEIRUT— The Public Works Ministry, in cooperation with the World Bank (WB), launched a study on port infrastructure Friday that outlines a plan to rehabilitate the Port of Beirut and redesign the legislative and regulatory framework for this sector.

Here’s what we know:

•  The amount needed to finance the project was not communicated, but Minister of Public Works Ali Hamieh told L'Orient Today that “the part of the project that redesigns the legislative and regulatory framework will be completed in two months, and the rest [will be done] in July.”

•  WB chose the consulting firm, Dutch Royal Haskoning following a tender. “The consultant brings expertise, but Lebanon's role is essential to the success of the project," stressed Hamieh.

•  The launch of the project took place at the Grand Serail, in the presence of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, the World Bank Regional Director for the Middle East, Saroj Kumar Jha, and the French Ambassador to Lebanon, Anne Grillo.
