Since the fall of the Assad regime, we have sent more than a dozen journalists, photographers and videographers to Syria. Because we are convinced that what is unfolding there is crucial for the region — and even more so for Lebanon. The new Syria is far from fully taking shape. The country remains fragmented and devastated. Its president, Ahmad el-Sharaa, is undoubtedly a political animal, but his project remains partly enigmatic. He enjoys the support of the majority of the population, yet the break with several minority communities seems complete. On the geopolitical front, the situation is still unstable, notably due to Israeli interventionism. On the economic front, the Gulf countries have promised billions, but only a few tens of millions have been invested over the past year. To explore every facet of this new Syria, we are offering a dedicated series marking the first anniversary of Assad’s fall. It brings together new reporting along with a selection of articles published in recent months, all of which shed light on a country in the midst of profound transformation.
