Fairuz: Beyond the Myth

Who doesn’t know Fairuz? Beyond just an artist, she is the emblem of a country. To mark the icon's 90th birthday, L'Orient Today looks back at the journey of a young girl of exceptional talent who, one fateful day, crossed paths with the Rahbani brothers. From that meeting an enchanting trio was born at a time when Lebanon had only recently become independent. In the artistic fervor of the 1950s, the country was searching for its founding myths. And in Fairuz, it found its most powerful embodiment. So much so that, in a fractured Lebanon, each camp would project its own hopes and vision of the homeland onto her over the decades. But the diva never took sides. A muse for a Lebanon that belongs to all, to speak out would have meant representing only a few.
