One year on from October 7

Beyond the numbers: stories of lives cut short in Gaza and Lebanon

Since October 7, 2023, the Middle East has been rocked by the brutal winds of war. The Hamas offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, while Israel's response in Gaza has left more than 41,000 people dead, nearly 100,000 wounded, and close to 2 million displaced. Following Hezbollah's opening of its “support front” on October 8, the conflict between Israel and the Shiite group—which escalated dangerously at the end of September—has led to almost 2,000 deaths, 10,000 injuries, and a million displaced individuals on the Lebanese side. These staggering figures can often obscure the names and faces of the individuals behind them. One year after the onset of this nightmarish sequence of events, L'Orient Today has chosen to recount the stories of some of those lost lives in Gaza and Lebanon.
