BEIRUT — The public works and transport ministry announced Friday the continuation of its project to rehabilitate three fishing ports along the coastline, with the goal of improving working conditions for fishermen and strengthening the sustainability of these facilities.
In Ain al-Mreisseh, on Beirut's corniche, the construction and rehabilitation work on facilities intended for fishermen has made "significant progress," according to a statement from the ministry.
"The foundations have been completed and work is continuing according to the planned schedule, with the aim of creating modern spaces better suited to the needs of fishermen," the statement relayed by the state-run National News Agency said.
The ministry added that a new protective breakwater is also under construction at the Jal al-Bahr port, which is also on the capital's shores, to improve the safety and mooring of fishing boats while preserving the port's infrastructure.
In Barbara, in the Jbeil district, the reconstruction of the fishermen's cooperative headquarters, which was destroyed by a fire in 2025, is also nearing completion, the statement added. "A large part of the work has been completed, and the equipment as well as the basic services are being installed to allow the building to reopen as soon as possible," the ministry specified.
These projects are part of an "integrated vision" aimed at developing ports and facilities dedicated to maritime fishing, improving the services provided to fishermen, and supporting the economic and social role of this sector in coastal regions, the ministry concluded.
