Syrian internal security forces on Wednesday discovered a tunnel linking Syria and Lebanon in the southern countryside of Homs (west), reportedly used for "arms trafficking" operations between the two countries, according to the Syrian news channel Al-Ekhbariya. Several warehouses containing weapons and ammunition intended for smuggling were also found.

At the end of March, a 'smuggling' tunnel connecting Syrian and Lebanese territories had already been discovered by the Syrian army near Hoch al-Sayed Ali, a border village straddling both countries, according to Syrian official news agency SANA.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on Dec. 8, 2024, Damascus has regularly announced seizures of smuggled weapons at the border with Lebanon, as well as Captagon, an illegal synthetic amphetamine that has become Syria's leading export during the civil war since 2011. The new Syrian authorities are also seeking to prevent the smuggling of weapons from Syria to the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, a longtime ally of the deposed president.
