BEIRUT — Municipal police in Zahle, in the Bekaa, intercepted a car late Monday carrying “automatic weapons and wireless communication devices” and arrested its four passengers, the municipality said in a statement Tuesday.
Police stopped the red Kia during a routine patrol late Monday after deeming it suspicious, the statement said. Officers pursued and intercepted the vehicle following a chase.
The four suspects were arrested and handed over to the Zahle police station, where the investigation is underway, the municipality added.
On April 3, the Bekaa investigation unit also arrested suspects found in possession of military-grade weapons.
The incidents come amid renewed fighting between Hezbollah and Israel since March 2.
Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar said Tuesday that municipalities have an “essential role” in maintaining security. He added that security forces have increased their presence across several regions.
