The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Thursday that it was about to distribute supplies to “4,000 displaced people” in the Deir al-Ahmar region, which has seen an influx of new arrivals into reception centers in recent weeks after a series of deadly strikes on the Bekaa.

“Our trucks have just arrived in Deir al-Ahmar and are ready to distribute essential supplies to 4,000 displaced people, who are being sheltered in nine reception centers,” UNHCR wrote on X. The Christian village of Deir al-Ahmar is located some 15 kilometers from Baalbeck. In an initial message, the High Commission indicated that the four trucks contained 1,500 blankets, 1,000 winter coats, 900 mattresses and 700 solar lamps. “With temperatures dropping rapidly, these essential supplies will keep families warm and safe,” added the U.N. agency.

Deir al-Ahmar and the surrounding area have welcomed thousands of new displaced persons in recent weeks. Although the Bekaa Valley had already been regularly bombarded since the escalation of the Israeli offensive on Sept. 23, the month of October proved particularly deadly for the region, where the Israeli air force carried out dozens of strikes, some following evacuation orders for the entire town of Baalbeck.
