BEIRUT — A member of the Lebanese Army was found dead by two gunshots fired from a military pistol at his station in the vicinity of the port of Beirut, the Army announced in a short statement published on its X account.

Later, the army announced it had arrested the alleged "perpetrator of the murder" in the Mirna Chalouhi area, stating that "the arrest followed a raid during which exchanges of fire occurred between the suspect and soldiers."

The Lebanese army identified the soldier as Abdel Salam Mohammad Charaf, who died on June 13, 2024, after being shot by two bullets.

The body was found on the night of June 13 to 14, and the victim's weapon has not been found, the army added.

Contacted by L'Orient Today, the army declined to comment, emphasizing that an investigation is underway.

Charaf, born on May 26, 2003, had his enlistment in the army extended to March 6, 2023. He was single. His remains were taken from the military hospital in Badaro to his father's home in Barja, in Iqlim el-Kharroub, south of Beirut (Chouf district). Prayers were held at the Khashoggi mosque in Beirut at 4:15 p.m., before he was laid to rest in the martyrs' cemetery in Tayyouneh.
