BEIRUT — A Syrian woman was fatally shot in the head during a brawl between two men on Tuesday night in the Wadi al-Nahleh area of Tripoli, northern Lebanon, according to our regional correspondent, Michel Hallak.

She was killed when the confrontation between the two men escalated and one opened fire multiple times, mistakenly hitting the woman and slightly injuring another woman of Lebanese nationality.

Both women were transported by the Red Cross to the Tripoli Governmental Hospital. The Syrian victim succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Incidents like this are tragically common in Lebanon, where firearms are easily accessible, whether licensed or not. This issue is particularly prevalent in northern Lebanon where there is a particularly wide proliferation of firearms. Easy access to guns in times of tension and anger greatly increases the likelihood of confrontations becoming deadly. Several gunfights have erupted in Akkar over the past few months between members of feuding families.
