BEIRUT — National Social Security Fund (NSSF) employees announced Monday that they will suspend all their activities on Thursday to protest against the deterioration of their working conditions in crisis-hit Lebanon.

In a statement, the employees denounced "the false promises of the outgoing Prime Minister to the Executive Council" of the NSSF, as well as "the failure of negotiations between the caretaker Labor Minister and the Board of Directors" regarding their demands.

The NSSF employees are demanding improved medical coverage, educational allowances, and salary adjustments.

"Given that the situation has become unbearable for the employees and beneficiaries of the NSSF ... the Executive Council calls on employees in all offices, especially the central headquarters, to suspend their work on Thursday, July 27, as a form of protest," the statement adds.

"If the Board of Directors does not respond to our demands, we will only work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week, starting from August 1st," concluded the workers.

The NSSF employees have already demonstrated on numerous occasions in recent years.

Civil servants are still receiving their salaries in Lebanese lira, which has lost over 95 percent of its value against the dollar. Lebanon's authorities continue to delay the necessary reforms to address this collapse, as the country is facing a double executive vacancy.
