Port silo fires: Between local residents’ panic and authorities’ embarrassment
As the fermentation of wheat caused the silo fires, the use of water would only aggravate the problem, said the experts who believe that the only solution would be to wait for the fire to extinguish naturally

A thick black smoke continued to rise yesterday from the Beirut port grain silos. Hundreds of tons of grain, trapped in these huge storage facilities since the Aug. 4, 2020, blast, have been raging almost non-stop for two weeks.This is enough to shock local residents who are still traumatized by the port explosion and are asphyxiated by the smoke coming from the site.The first attempt to extinguish the fire, with the help of army’s firefighting helicopters, ended in failure on July 15.The second attempt was made on July 21 by the Beirut Fire Brigade and the Civil Defense.But the fire will likely resume very soon, experts told L’Orient-Le Jour.
