BEIRUT — Caretaker Minister of Industry George Bouchikian banned on Thursday the import of bulgur (burghul) without a prior permit from the Ministry of Industry, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Here’s what we know:
• According to the NNA, Bouchikian explained that the decision was taken to protect the national production of bulgur and Lebanon’s food security.
• The head of the General Directorate of Cereals and Sugar Beets, Georges Berberi, told L’Orient Today that Lebanon often produces bulgur from local-grown durum wheat and imports a portion of its market needs of bulgur from other countries, mainly Turkey.
