Person killed by stray bullet after gunfire breaks out in Akkar

BEIRUT — A person died Friday evening during an armed clash between residents of the villages of Abdeh in Akkar, North Lebanon, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in North Lebanon reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to our correspondent, the victim who died, who is from the area and is not involved in the fight, was hit by a stray bullet following an exchange of fire with automatic weapons between the residents of the village. Storefronts of some shops in the area were shattered by bullets, forcing businesses to close their doors. The reasons that led to the fight are still not known. The Lebanese Army deployed to the region following the incident and managed to stop the clash.

    • Earlier today, a person was killed in the locality of Kneiseh, in the Bekaa, after an argument between several individuals which also escalated into exchanges of fire.

    • Abdeh also suffered today from a fire (which was later extinguished) that burnt green spaces in a plantation area that belongs to the Agriculture Ministry in the region.

    • Armed clashes take place regularly especially in neglected areas like the North and the Bekaa where weapons circulate freely, and as the state of security in the country keeps getting worse following the unprecedented economic crisis that Lebanon is suffering from.
