BEIRUT — Unsuccessful candidate in the 2022 parliamentary elections, Zeina Mounzer (Beirut II), who ran on the same electoral list with member of Parliament Fouad Makhzoumi, filed an appeal to the Constitutional Council on Thursday against two winning MPs, Faysal Sayegh and Waddah Sadek, a Makhzoumi spokesperson told L’Orient Today.

Here’s what we know:

    • Zeina Mounzer ran on Makhzoumi’s National Dialogue party-backed candidate list in the Beirut II constituency, “Beirut Needs a Heart,” for the Druze seat but failed to secure a seat. Only Makhzoumi won from his 11-member electoral list.

    • According to Makhzoumi’s spokesperson, Mounzer filed her appeal to the Constitutional Council against successful MP Faysal Sayegh, an incumbent MP who is linked to the Progressive Socialist Party and who ran for the Druze seat in Beirut II on the “Beirut Confronts” list, supported by the PSP and Fouad Siniora. Mounzer’s appeal is also against the winning opposition MP, Waddah Sadek, who ran on the “Beirut the Change” list for a Sunni seat in Beirut II.

    • Mounzer presented her appeal today which marks the deadline for filing such appeals.

    • In a tweet on Thursday, Makhzoumi announced an official appeal was presented challenging the results of the parliamentary elections in Beirut's second district, alleging that “there are many question marks about these elections.” Makhzoumi added that there was “a 36-hour delay in issuing the [election results in this constituency, in addition to the disappearance of the results of 66 ballot boxes for two whole weeks.”

    • On Tuesday, multiple unsuccessful candidates in the 2022 parliamentary elections, filed appeals to the Constitutional Council, including Elie Charbachi (Beirut I), former MP Faisal Karami, (North II), and Jad Ghosn (Mount Lebanon II).
