BEIRUT — Protests swept through parts of Tripoli in the aftermath of the incident Saturday night that left at least six people dead at sea while trying to escape Lebanon.

Here’s what we know:

  • Angry protestors blocked roads in Qubba, Tripoli, with burning tires Sunday afternoon. L’Orient Today’s correspondents reported clashes with security forces in the area, and heavy gunfire. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the gunfire. There have been reports of unidentified gunmen in the area. Protestors reportedly destroyed a military checkpoint in the city while other people attacked a government hospital in the area.

  • The state-run National News Agency reported that protestors were removing pictures of politicians from the city walls.

  • Calls circulated on social media for people to take to the streets in different regions of the country. Roadblocks were also reported in Tripoli’s Minieh and Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhoods and the Beirut transportation hub, Cola.
