BEIRUT – Syrian Social Nationalist Party head Rabi Banat announced the party’s list of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections at the Al Madina Theater in Hamra on Saturday, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Here’s what we know:
• The SSNP candidates are Walid Al-Azar in the North III district, Antoine Khalil in Mount Lebanon II, Jawdat Boutros in North II, Ramzi Maalouf in Beirut II, Shakib Abboud in North I and Hanna Geagea in Bekaa III. Banat said that the candidates would “enact the party’s political, judicial, economic, social and environmental plans and reform projects.”
• “Parliamentary battles, alongside popular resistance and social solidarity, is the alternative to armed conflict, which some are trying to instigate,” Banat said during the announcement.
• Banat rallied the Lebanese to demand “a new, non-confessional electoral law that considers Lebanon as a single district and lowers the minimum age of suffrage to 18.” Among the party head’s key talking points were civil marriage and a unified personal status law.
