Retired public school teachers on third day of protest in Zahle, with fourth to come, in Aley and Hasbaya

BEIRUT – The Committee of Retired Public Primary School Teachers held its third consecutive day of protest on Friday by holding a sit-in at the Zahle municipality and announced in a statement two protests scheduled for Saturday in Aley and Hasbaya, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • The committee’s statement said that the protests aimed to “claim the rights promised to the teachers,” including “a transportation allowance, a monthly salary, social assistance, full contracts, and living expenses that match the lira to dollar exchange rate.”

    • Nisrine Chahine, head of the committee, announced that two protests would take place tomorrow, one in front of the Shakib Jaber statue in Aley at 10 a.m. and another at the entrance to Hasbaya at 11 a.m.

    • Teachers’ unions had called for a strike on Jan. 21 to protest their employment conditions and demand better remuneration in the face of declining purchasing power.
