BEIRUT— Tripoli port workers carried out a sit-in in front of the Union of Port Workers headquarters in sympathy with the land transport unions, which began a three-day strike on Wednesday.
Here’s what we know:
• The workers started a sit-in at the invitation of the General Labor Union and the head of the Tripoli Port Workers Union Ahmad Al-Saeed, and in solidarity with the land transport unions.
• The protestors denounced lifting subsidies from basic needs like fuel, medicine and wheat.
• Al-Saeed stressed in a speech that “we share [the land transport unions'] cry, their demands are rights,” thanking the army leadership, military and security institutions and customs for their efforts to maintain the security of the port.
