BEIRUT – Tammam Salam, member of parliament and former prime minister, announced on Thursday that he will not run in May’s parliamentary elections.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a statement, Salam said that he hopes his decision will allow “real change, by giving new figures and new thinking a chance.”

    • “It is out of respect for the demands of the revolting Lebanese people who aspire to change and deserve a chance to build the nation through ambitious ideas and actions that I decided not to run for the legislative elections,” the former PM’s statement said.

    • However, he said that he “will continue to contribute to everything that makes it possible to rebuild the country in accordance with the Constitution and the Taif Agreement.”

    • Elections are expected to be held on May 15, and while many political parties are preparing, Sunni leaders are debating their own participation.

    • Future Movement head Saad Hariri returned to Beirut on Thursday after a long stay in the United Arab Emirates. According to a source close to him, he will hold meetings with the members of his party as well as the party's executive board before deciding on whether to run for elections or not.
