BEIRUT — A large number of fish were found floating dead in Saida’s fishing port on Friday after the water was allegedly contaminated by leaked sewage, L’Orient Today’s correspondent in the area reports.

Here’s what we know:

    • The shock to marine life in Saida’s fishing port is linked to the interruption of the Sinik wastewater treatment plant’s activity due to fuel shortages, port workers told L’Orient Today.

    • Environmentalist Rabih Awji warned of an “environmental catastrophe” if sewage water continues to seep into the fishing port.

    • In April, agricultural and industrial waste leakages led to the death of hundreds of tons of carp in Lake Qaraoun in West Bekaa.
