Around 100 demonstrators gathered in front of the oil installations south of Tripoli to denounce the presence of dangerous and explosive products.

They had responded to a call from the Union of al-Fayha Municipalities and other unions in North Lebanon. The Union of al-Fayha Municipalities includes the municipalities of Tripoli, Mina, Beddawi and Qalamoun in North Lebanon. Oil installations are managed by the Ministry of Energy and Water.

According to our correspondent in North Lebanon, the Union's president, Hassan Ghamraoui, based his decision on a report drawn up by the Combi Lift company, which inspected the installations and of which the army is aware.

Combi Lift is the German company responsible for the disposal of chemicals in the port of Beirut, which was blown up on Aug. 4, 2020, by an explosion involving several tons of ammonium nitrate.

The Union leader claimed to have tried to contact the ministry, which he said has not responded to his calls. He is now turning to the Ministry of the Interior and Municipalities.

Contacted by L'Orient-Le Jour, the Ministry of Energy said it has taken note of the demands made by the demonstrators and is due to get back to us to answer our questions.
