New Israeli strikes in the west and near Damascus

An Israeli drone targeted a Hezbollah vehicle in western Syria on Thursday, while explosions were heard in Damascus, already targeted by Israeli strikes the previous evening, according to an NGO and an AFP journalist.

"An Israeli drone targeted a Hezbollah car in the Homs region," near the border with Lebanon, Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), told AFP.

According to the UK-based NGO, which has an extensive network of sources in Syria, "Israeli strikes also targeted southwest Damascus."

An AFP journalist in the Syrian capital heard distant explosions. Official Syrian media did not initially confirm this.

Israel had already carried out strikes against targets near Damascus on Wednesday evening, according to the Syrian Ministry of Defense.

SOHR reported that sites belonging to pro-Iranian groups, including Hezbollah, had been targeted, and that two fighters had been killed.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria since the outbreak of the neighboring country's civil war in 2011, mainly targeting groups close to Iran, including Hezbollah, which fights alongside Bashar al-Assad's regime.

These strikes have intensified since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas in Gaza in October 2023.

On Feb. 25, two Hezbollah members were killed in Syria in an Israeli strike on a truck near the border with Lebanon, according to the OSDH.
