Our photographer Mohammad Yassine captures moments from Christmas in the capital, while along the southern border, Lebanon is hit hard by spillover from the war in Gaza.

Christmas, despite everything, in the streets of Beirut

The war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza is plunging the whole region into mourning, from the occupied West Bank to Syria, to Lebanon, where the conflict has spilled over into the south, claiming the lives of more than 140 people since Oct. 8.

Festivities have been cancelled in many cities, including Damascus and Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus.

Beirut has suffered under several crises, including a dire economic one, for years before the war began, but the Christmas atmosphere has nevertheless taken hold in certain streets of the capital, such as in the city center and Achrafieh, to the delight of young and old alike.
