BEIRUT — Acting General Security Chief Elias Bayssari announced on Friday the arrest at Beirut's airport of two suspects who have alleged connections with Israel.

During a press conference held for the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the General Security at its headquarters in Adlieh, Beirut, Bayssari said that the "network is comprised of two individuals" and was assigned to do operations inside [Lebanon]."

"We investigated with them, referred them to the military justice and will reveal [their] threat in later statements," Bayssari added.

General Security did not immediately respond to L'Orient Today's requests for comment. The suspects' country or countries of citizenship was not immediately clear.

On Dec. 7, 2022, two security sources told AFP that Lebanon had arrested 185 people suspected of collaborating with Israel since its 2019 economic collapse left many Lebanese desperate for cash. These suspects mainly involved military and telecommunications employees.

On March 27, 2023, a Lebanese man was arrested in Aramoun under suspicion that he was spying for Israel. And on April 11 of this year, the Lebanese Army announced the arrest of another Lebanese man suspected of being an "agent in the service of a foreign entity" and believed to have prepared explosive devices with help from the first suspect.
