BEIRUT — Municipal health workers seized expired meat, fish and other food products from butcheries in Tripoli Wednesday, L'Orient Today's local correspondent reported.

This seizure comes amid a broader campaign by the municipality to inspect butcher shops, grocery stores and restaurants in Tripoli.

The seized foodstuffs were reportedly destroyed.

The poverty rate in Tripoli is one of the highest in Lebanon. The country's three-year economic crisis has also had a considerable effect on food safety, with electricity shortages meaning poor refrigeration.

On Tuesday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that "more than half of the population lives below the poverty line and two million people face food insecurity."
