Six migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have been sentenced to two years in prison after an operation to clear camps in Casablanca last month, media reports said Friday.

The six were found guilty of "contempt and violence against law enforcement officials, damage to public property and illegal entry into Morocco," the Alyaoum24 news site reported.

Morocco is a transit country for many migrants, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa, seeking to reach Europe from the kingdom's Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts.

The six were arrested in Morocco's commercial capital on January 16, after an exchange that left a police officer injured and five police vehicles damaged, reports at the time said.

They were also fined 60,000 dirhams (about 5,500 euros) each, Alyaoum24 said.

Enass, a media outlet specialising in migrant issues, said the six "did not have access to legal aid" during the trial, which was staged in Casablanca.
