November inflation rate sees fourfold decline

BEIRUT — Lebanon's monthly overall inflation, calculated by the Central Administration of Statistics and released Tuesday, stood at 3.74 percent month-on-month in November compared to 14.65 percent in October, showing a roughly fourfold decrease.

The decrease nevertheless comes as the country's economic crisis continues, with the currency surpassing LL46,000 to the dollar Wednesday.

According to the monthly index, which tracks price changes since Dec. 2013, an item that cost LL100 at the end of 2013 now costs LL1,916, compared with LL1,847 in October. Year-on-year, the inflation rate also fell in November from 158.46 percent to 142.37 percent. 

On a monthly basis, furniture prices recorded the highest inflation (12.84 percent), followed by alcoholic beverages and tobacco (9.28 percent) and clothing (8.61 percent).

Prices in hotels and restaurants rose by 6.06 percent, while food prices increased by 2.06 percent. On an annual basis, food prices rose by 171.24 percent since 2021 and restaurant and hotel prices by 176.3 percent. Next on the lineup in November were the cost of water, gas, electricity and fuel, up 234.69 percent, communications (226.27 percent) and education (191.35 percent).

Finally, the month-on-month prices increased in each governorate of the country, starting with South Lebanon (up 5.89 percent), followed by Mount Lebanon (3.97 percent), North Lebanon (3.49 percent), Beirut (3.46 percent), Nabatieh (2.61 percent) and the Bekaa (2.04 percent).
