BEIRUT — General Security announced in a tweet on Wednesday new passport renewal fees in line with Lebanon's 2022 budget, which went into effect on Tuesday after being published in the Official Gazette.

Renewal of a five-year passport will now cost LL1,000,000, up from LL600,000, while the renewal of a 10-year passport will cost LL2,000,000, up from LL1,200,000, according to General Security, which added that the new fees will be applied once the law goes into effect, meaning once it is published in the Official Gazette.

Due to the crisis, the government is not capable of ordering enough passport templates from abroad to meet the high demand for the documents, and is facing a monthslong backlog in appointments for passport renewals. Requirements have also been imposed on Lebanese people seeking to obtain a passport to show solid travel plans, such as a valid plane ticket, hotel reservation or proof of registration for an educational institution.

In mid-June, General Security relaunched its online platform for making appointments to obtain or renew passports, after services were suspended for over a month. The online platform was created because of the high demand for passports following the ongoing economic crisis and mass emigration of Lebanese.
