BEIRUT — A Lebanese Army soldier was severely injured on Tuesday by a landmine explosion in northern Lebanon's Wadi Khaled, near the border with Syria, eyewitnesses told L'Orient Today's correspondent in the area.

The Lebanese Red Cross transported him to a hospital in the nearby town of Qobeiyat, where he remained in critical condition, an official from the organization confirmed to L'Orient Today.

Three days ago, a landmine exploded in near Arab al-Mawali and Chamsine, in a mountainous part of the Bekaa region, seriously injuring a man and causing a loud booming sound near the Syrian border.

Landmines remain in various parts of Lebanon after wars in recent decades and continue to claim victims. Mine clearance operations conducted by UN teams and the Lebanese Army have cleared many of these devices.
