BEIRUT — President Michel Aoun reiterated that he would not sign the decree to amend the electoral law rescheduling upcoming parliamentary elections for March 27, according to comments published Friday by Al-Akhbar.
Here’s what we know:
• Aoun said he would only approve elections dates for May 8 or 15 of next year, arguing that younger Lebanese may be prevented from voting if the date was moved up as they would not have turned 21 — the legal voting age — in time for the polls.
• MPs of the Free Patriotic Movement — headed by Aoun’s son-in-law MP Gebran Bassil — filed a complaint on Wednesday before the Constitutional Council, demanding the suspension of the amendment.
• Legislators have twice voted in favor of an electoral law amendment that schedules the upcoming 2022 elections for March rather than for the original May date.
