Beirut's southern suburbs, the day after: In images

Dozens of buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold relentlessly bombarded by Israeli airstrikes from Friday night into Saturday, have collapsed, according to an AFP photographer. Some buildings were still burning Saturday morning, with smoke rising from the rubble, which blocked certain streets. The normally bustling, populous area was eerily quiet, as residents fled en masse following evacuation orders from the Israeli army Friday night. Even Lebanese army checkpoints at the entrances to the suburb were deserted, the photographer added.

The Israeli army bombarded Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, until 5 a.m. on Saturday, where an exceptionally violent raid had targeted, earlier on Friday evening and according to Israeli media, the party's powerful leader, Hassan Nasrallah. A source close to Hezbollah told AFP that Nasrallah was unharmed. However, nearly 12 hours after the strike, with the latest provisional toll reporting 6 dead and around 100 injured, the party had yet to issue an official statement.
