BEIRUT — Judicial assistants announced Saturday an weeklong strike, starting Monday, at courthouses across the country to demand the improvement of their working conditions. The announcement follows a similar call made by several judges.

Here's what we know:

    • In a statement, the judicial assistants, who have previously carried out several strikes, criticized "the indifference of the concerned parties to their suffering," as well as the fact that they have no health coverage. They also denounced the collapse of their salaries' value and the destruction of their purchasing power in view of the depreciation of the national currency, adding that they could only afford go to their offices twice a week following the increase in fuel prices.

    • The court officers said they "will no longer go to all courthouses, without exception, from Monday," noting, however, that two officials will be available to receive requests with urgent deadlines. They also showed "solidarity" with the call for a judges strike.

    • Court officers, as well as judges, have recently observed several strikes to demand improvements in their working conditions. They have also criticized the condition of many courthouses, some of which lack water and electricity and are not well maintained.
